The Good News
Everything we do is centered around the gospel, which means “good news.” We can summarize it in four words:
1. God
There is one holy, good, all-powerful God who created everything, including mankind in his image, to live in a special relationship with him. (Genesis 1:26-28; Acts 17:26, 31)
2. Man
However, because of our sin, we have fallen out of that special relationship. Because God is good and just, the penalty of our rebellion is death and eternal separation in hell––a real place of judgment. Our greatest need, which rises above everything else, is rescue and reconciliation with God. We cannot earn or merit this rescue ourselves. It must come from the outside. (Romans 3:23, 6:23)
3. Christ
Here’s where the “good news” gets its name. God loves you so much that he sent his perfect Son, Jesus, as your rescuer, redeemer, and substitution. Jesus is fully God and fully man, and his sacrifice on the cross paid the sin debt you could never repay. Three days later, he was resurrected from the grave as our victorious King, Savior, and Lord. (Mark 10:45; Romans 5:8)
4. Response
The Bible says that if we will repent (turn from) our sin and believe (turn to) Jesus in faith, we will be rescued and reconciled to God. We cannot earn or merit salvation; we simply yield ourselves to Jesus and receive his free gift of grace. Upon trusting in Christ for this salvation, our whole life now belongs to him as Lord. (Mark 1:15; Acts 3:19; Romans 8:1)
